Born in Mexico has a Communications Design BA from Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana, and MS from Pratt Institute also in Communication Design. He has worked as an Illustrator for major newspapers and magazines in the U.S.. He Designed Christmas cards for MoMA, Art directed different magazines and worked as one of the Art directors for the Ink Tank Animation Company in New York under the wing of R. O. Blechman. 

During that time He designed 24 animated episodes of Troubles the Cat for the Cartoon Network and CTW (Children Television Network), designed and animated Children shorts films for HBO (two of the programs won an Emmy and a Peabody award), he designed openers for the French TF!. 

Over the last 10 years he has done close to 20 children's books for editorial companies like Marshall Cavendish, Viking, GP Putnam, Zanner-Bloser, Houghton Mifflin, Warner, Golden Books, Zondervon, Chronicle, Blue Apple books and Skypony.


Santiago also designed the first logo for Comedy Central and a film for the Poison Control Center for New York City. He has designed several websites including his own. As a fine artist Santiago has individual and collective art shows in galleries in New York and Mexico. 

He received a grant from the Xeric Foundation to self publish his graphic novel "The Fifth Name". Over his career he has received different design, Illustration and animation awards by Asifa East, Broadcast designer association, American Illustration and the Art Director’s club. 


He recently finished his ExVida memoir painted in ex-voto style, with over1150 paintings done. It took him seven years to make and had a major show in September 2013 at the Hunterdon Museum in Clinton, NJ. Santiago was the artist in residence for the RNA in Jersey City for two years in charge of the Day of the dead big puppet parade. In January 2015 completed a mural in Gateway South Orange.
